Ilario Liburni // Tzinah Podcast // Interview // September 2013 //

Ilario-Liburni-Tzinah-Records

“Intensive studio sessions”. It describes briefly what you need to know about Belgium Based Ilario Liburni’s current activity. With releases on Defected, Noir Music, Rawthentic, Inmotion, Kina Music, Earlydub Records it’s incontestable that he is on the move.

Tzinah Records: So how did all begin for you?

Ilario Liburni: I was 12 years old when I started to listen to “trance music”. I remember when my older brother bought me some compilation CD’s from one of Belgium’s biggest events in that time called “Dance Opera”. That’s when I got interested in music. After a couple of years I asked my dad to buy me turntables. I wanted to be a DJ!!! ☺ Didn’t take long before he got me the whole system. That’s when the noise in my room came in to play! My dad couldn’t tolerate this and decided to build a room for me in the warehouse of his company where I could make as much noise as I wanted, which eventually became my studio and still is today. After playing in some local clubs and parties, I wanted to learn a DAW and create my own productions. So… this is how it all started! ☺

Tzinah Records:  Where did your name come from?

Ilario Liburni is my real name. It’s Italian. (Italian parents) Actually the full name is “Ilario Tony Carmine Liburni”. Didn’t need another artist name. I like the real one! ☺

Tzinah Records:  What role does the artist have in society in your opinion? Why do you do what you do?

I just like the idea of being a deejay, producer and entertainer. Travelling, see the world and meet new people everywhere. It has always been my dream!

Tzinah Records:  Why did you choose to play this music?

My first choice of music was Trance or Retro House. When I started to play in the local clubs and parties, I used to play a more groovy sound with vocals and stuff. Later on came Minimal and Progressive. Then House and Tech-House. And now I’m more into the deeper and dark kind like Techno, Deep House, Organic House or Micro House. I just love the experimental sounds in these genres. It’s like there are no rules for creating this kind of music. Use raw beats, play with the drums, use deep sub-basses, mess up some sounds, experiment with effects, add trippy pads and you got yourself a nice deep underground track!
But music keeps changing…who knows what I’ll be playing in 10 years…

Tzinah Records:  Describe a real-life situation that inspired you.

First time I went to Ibiza… changed a lot! I discovered a new style of music. Underground Music became a part of my life! ☺

Tzinah Records:  What do you think about the music scene in your country? What is your opinion about European underground music scene, new talents, old producers and also what do you think about Romanian artists?

Belgium used to have an amazing music scene, but I personally find that it all went a bit backwards during the last decade on club level. We only have a small amount of real quality clubs like Fuse (Brussels), Café d’Anvers (Antwerp), Decadance (Gent) and a few more… but what we do have, is the biggest dance festival, which is “Tomorrowland”! ☺ And a handfull of promotors are doing their best to keep the underground scene alive in our country and I respect this a lot because without them we would have to deal with too much “Guetta” and “Shitbull” music around us ☺

Lately there a lot of new fresh talents popping out everywhere. For instance in our country my friends Deltano, Massimo Girardi and also Fernando Constantini, …etc…

Tzinah Records:  If you could pick one place you would like to play where would it be and why?

Playing in Amnesia, Space, DC10, etc… in Ibiza would be a dream come true. I hope to play there some day. Never stop dreaming, right? ☺ But I also never played in the “FUSE” club in Brussels. Such a nice club! It’s on my to do list for sure! ☺

Tzinah Records:  If you had the opportunity to change something about the music industry what would it be?

I think there are too many shitty labels around. Everybody starts a digital label these days and begin releasing every week with the worst music! They do it because it’s not expensive and easy to get in to it. The digital label world has become a real mess in my opinion. I’m starting a label too this year, but really, I’m not going to work this way…
I want to keep it exclusive and put some time and money in vinyl as well. People who effort to release on vinyl, won’t release whatever. It has to be right!
Maybe they should do something about that.

Tzinah Records:  Out of all tunes you have made, which one you think ‘never fails’?

“Crapkin” on Inmotion Music is my favorite track. It’s also the track that opened a lot of new doors for me. It’s been supported by many big names and I still get lots of congrats for this piece. The track sounds really cool and has a special groove. This one never fails for me.

Tzinah Records:  What inspires you to keep going and how do you keep yourself motivated?

After having a few “successful” releases, people begin to know you. And you start getting friendly messages from all over the world to say how much they love your productions. Even idols where I look up to, send messages to congratulate me. That gives me a really good feeling. And I always want to strive for more! That’s where I find the motivation to continue.

Tzinah Records:  What else do you do besides playing music?

I’m a warehouse manager in my dad’s construction company! Besides that I try to sport as much as I can. And of course there is always time for my girlfriend. ☺

Tzinah Records:  What makes you angry?

Hmmm, where to start…

Tzinah Records:  What is your favorite food?

There is nothing better then Italian food!

Tzinah Records: What computer/gear do you use?

Mac Pro (Tower)
Genelec 8050 monitors
RME Fireface
Moog Little Phatty
Korg Micro X
Native Instruments
Waves
Korg Volca Series
My cellphone to record stuff
More fun toys…

Tzinah Records:  It sounds quite easy to make music today, with the amount of software programs/synths being readily available for everyone. What do you think about this evolution?

I think it’s really cool. With al the software and synths of today, you can make a professional sounding track without actually know how to play an instrument. Of course I have more respect for bands that play live. Those are the real artists for me.

Tzinah Records:  Do you have the fondness for playing vinyl or have you developed a preference for new media, such as CDs or a purely digital format?

After playing a while with “NI Traktor”, I finally decided to go back to vinyl and USB for mp3’s. I’m tired to mess with the cables on a gig.

Tzinah Records: What are you working on at the moment? Any present and future projects that you want to share with us?

I’m expecting some nice releases on labels like: D-floor Records with a Noir Remix , Serkal with a Francisco Allendes Remix, Moan, Memoria with a Pirupa remix, couple of remixes and a collaboration with my friend Deltano on Medicine Musique.

And then there is my own label called INVADE RECORDS, which will be launched very soon. You can pre-order it now on online stores… Check it out right here.
