Deaf Pillow // Interview // Tzinah Podcast // January 2016 //

Deaf PillowPioneering Lima’s house music scene, Christian Berger and Rodrigo Lozano propose a mature, forward thinking understanding of electronic music. Their sound is future oriented yet classic, merging the unexpected and unconventional in a very well structured way.

Deaf Pillow feels most eloquent in their extended sets, balancing a mental and mysterious atmosphere with an obscure but groovy mood. This allows them to tell a much more thorough story, to experiment, complement and discretely travel into a more sophisticated work.

With over ten years of experience, their production work has been released on their label Audionumb Music (PE), Crosstown Rebels (UK), the German labels Kindisch Music, Baile Musik and Get Pysical, Better On Foot (US), Sudbeat (ARG) and Hermine (FRA), as well as playing at well known festivals such as Club Quinto Sol, Creamfields, Circo Loco, Cocoon Heros, Tini and the Gang, Motion (Time Warp) and Superclub in South America.

They are long time residents at the legendary club La Huaka in Lima and Loop Promoteʼs favorites, shaping the Peruvian house scene with a sound of it’s own.

Tzinah Records: Could you remember when and where have you felt it for the first time that you were to become a music artist?
Deaf Pillow: We both were into music since very little, playing instruments at school and messing around with some friends at the age of 14 or so. A few years later each one found their own path towards the music we love.

Tzinah Records: Why did you choose to create and play this particular type of music? Are there any artists that touched you deeply while developing your own style?
Deaf Pillow: Because for us electronic music gives you the ability to create different atmospheres through a dj set or a certain track. It’s about building things going to different directions through music, playing with emotions and people’s mood etc. Its not about putting the hotter records out there, is about the whole trip. About the artists who inspired us through the years we can say there are so many its not fair to choose only a few.

Tzinah Records: Please, briefly, describe for us, the current state of the underground music scene in the place you come from. Is it any good?
Deaf Pillow: Lima have at the moment one of the finest scenes in South America, u can find artists form around the globe every weekend, it may not be very big but is very well educated music related.

Tzinah Records: Without giving out too much about your secret weapons, please tell us how does the magic work in your production routine. Software? Analog? What does your DJ set-up imply?
Deaf Pillow: We both bring ideas and start from them, we try to create something that will sound like what we play in our dj sets. Dj setup is 2 turntables, 2 cdjs, 1 allen & Heath Xone92.

Tzinah Records: What are the aspects of your daily life that are influencing the shape and sound of the music that you currently make?
