77 Mushrooms // Tzinah Podcast // Interview // November 2024 //

77Mushrooms, born in Nanjing, China, has been a professional DJ for nearly a decade, dedicated to advancing the underground music scene in Nanjing. Alongside his work as a DJ, he is a producer and promoter focused on minimal and house music. In 2019, he founded the BuGuSu label, through which he has brought numerous DJs from around the world to perform in China, contributing to the growth and diversity of the local music scene.

Tzinah Records: Could you remember when and where you first felt that you were destined to become a music artist?
77Mushrooms: Like many artists and DJs, I began my career in 2015. I was a resident DJ at PCP, a renowned underground club in my hometown, Nanjing. In 2018, I started producing music, mostly techno. DJing was my first job, and since I was 16, it’s been my only focus. I just wanted to share my music and happiness with others. Ten years have passed, and I still love what I do.

Tzinah Records: Why did you choose to create and play this particular type of music? Are there any artists who touched you deeply while you were developing your own style?
77Mushrooms: Initially, I played and produced techno. Around 2018, Chinese promoters began bringing artists like Mihai Pol, Priku, and Silat Beksi to China. This exposure opened up a new world for me, leading me to explore minimal and rominimal sounds.

Tzinah Records: Could you briefly describe the current state of the underground music scene where you come from? Is it any good?
77Mushrooms: In my hometown of Nanjing, the main underground sounds are house and minimal. We have two legendary clubs: Foundation Club and Mono4/4. My label, BuGuSu, regularly hosts parties at both, and they’re open only on weekends. In my opinion, they’re the best clubs around.

Tzinah Records: What aspects of your daily life influence the shape and sound of the music you currently make?
77Mushrooms: I’m an optimistic and cheerful guy who loves dancing and connecting with others. I enjoy all kinds of music, old and new. I’m grateful for everything in my life, which is a big part of why I love minimal and house music.

Tzinah Records: Which underground house DJ or producer would you love to take out for a summer picnic? With which artist (from any music genre) would you spend 24 hours stuck in an elevator?
77Mushrooms: Anybody who produces or plays minimal house music.

Tzinah Records: Have you already played in your dream venue? Which one is that?
77Mushrooms: Not yet, but I’m still working hard toward it. My dream is to play and dance with the crowd outdoors with a beautiful sunrise as the backdrop.

Tzinah Records: What motivates you to be an active part of the underground movement?
77Mushrooms: My immense love and passion for music. I want to promote it and bring more people into our community.

Tzinah Records: What’s your favorite type of breakfast?
77Mushrooms: Noodles.

Tzinah Records: What do you do when the music stops unexpectedly?
77Mushrooms: I’ve faced this many times! First, I check why it stopped, then I talk to the crowd, explaining what’s happening. Sometimes, I sing or tell jokes to keep everyone engaged on the dance floor.

Tzinah Records: Are there any upcoming projects or plans you’d like to share? Where can we see you play next?
77Mushrooms: My label, BuGuSu, has been hosting parties since 2019. I’m currently planning further development, such as music releases and other projects.

Tzinah Records: Suppose you come back and read this interview in 10 years. What would you like to say to your future self?
77Mushrooms: Don’t give up and keep working.
